Super Thanks and Super Chat split YouTube fan payments by format

The setup

YouTube groups several fan-payment tools under what it calls its Supers family, alongside a separate recurring channel memberships program. On 20 July 2021 the company published a blog post introducing the newest of them, Super Thanks, alongside its living Super Thanks help page and channel memberships help page, both as retrieved on 16 September 2026.

What the documents show

The 2021 announcement states Super Chat launched in 2017 and Super Stickers in 2019, both built for the moment a fan is watching something live. Super Thanks, it says, was built to bring that same one-time-payment mechanic to ordinary uploaded videos and Shorts, where there is no live moment to pay into. The eligibility page confirms the split still holds: it lists live streams and Premieres, while live, as content where Super Chat and Super Stickers can appear, while Super Thanks is unavailable during a live broadcast but becomes available on that same video once it is archived as a long-form upload. The memberships page adds that memberships sit apart from all three: a recurring monthly payment for standing perks such as badges and emoji, gated by the same baseline fan-funding eligibility rules rather than tied to any single stream or upload.

The craft

For a production airing an event, this split has a concrete consequence: a fan watching a concert premiere live can send Super Chat during the broadcast, but cannot send Super Thanks until the broadcast ends and the video becomes a normal upload, at which point Super Thanks becomes the tool for a fan who missed the live moment and wants to react afterward. Memberships run underneath both, unaffected by whether a given piece of content is live, archived or newly uploaded.

Keeping the creator in control

Understanding which tool applies when matters for how a team plans monetization around a single event: promising Super Thanks during a livestream would be promising something the documentation says the platform does not support at that moment, while under-promoting Super Chat and Super Stickers during the live window would leave the live-specific tool unused. This is an editorial reading of a practical planning implication, not an instruction the pages themselves give.
