Crypton's own license sets the real rules for drawing Miku

The setup

Crypton Future Media, Inc. owns Hatsune Miku and the other Character Vocal Series voices used across VTuber-adjacent fan culture, and it licenses fan use of the original character illustrations through two parallel instruments. Internationally, Crypton adopted the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 licence for the character art, explained on its For Creators page; domestically, it maintains the older Piapro Character License, or PCL, which the same page states was publicly announced in 2009 and remains available in Japanese alongside the CC option. Crypton's Japanese-language Character Usage Guideline, as retrieved on 16 September 2026, walks through both instruments article by article.

What the documents show

Both documents draw the same core line: non-commercial derivative use of the original character illustrations is permitted without contacting Crypton, commercial use is not, and non-commercial is defined narrowly as work done for no business purpose and no compensation. The English FAQ states the licence covers only the original illustrations, not Crypton's music, and that a video clip containing the characters cannot legally carry a CC-BY licence on YouTube, since that platform only offers a commercial-permitting CC option incompatible with CC BY-NC. The Japanese guideline adds detail the English summary omits: a scheme called Piapro Link lets a creator apply, case by case, for permission to receive token compensation, covering material costs, for small-run doujin distribution the free PCL tier does not itself allow.

The craft

A model-maker or illustrator using Miku's likeness needs to identify which activity they are doing: posting art for free online sits inside the base licence, selling a print for more than material cost sits inside Piapro Link's application process, and anything monetised through a platform's creator programs needs its own check against the FAQ's carve-outs. The guideline is explicit that credit lines matter: crediting Crypton and linking the licence is an expectation attached to the permission, not an optional courtesy.

Keeping the creator in control

For a creator whose own original character borrows Miku's design language, the practical safeguard is reading Crypton's own pages rather than a secondhand summary, because the licence does not cover adaptations made by other fans without their separate permission, and it excludes derogatory, sexual or violent treatments regardless of commercial status. This is an editorial point: a licence this specific exists because informal fan consensus about what is obviously fine has historically diverged from what Crypton has actually authorised.

• Is the planned use of the character limited to the original illustrations Crypton licenses, or does it involve music or another creator's adaptation?
• Does any money change hands beyond recovering material costs, and if so, has Piapro Link or direct contact with Crypton been used?
• Does the credit line match what the licence pages ask for, including a link back to the licence itself?

The PCL and its CC BY-NC counterpart are Crypton's actual legal position on Miku fan works, and they remain the reference point other IP holders in VTubing have looked to when writing their own guidelines, which is why reading the source document matters more here than in most corners of fan culture.
